Assembled by seasoned comedic performers Jason Frederick and Derek Leon in early 2004, the comedy troupe known as Cup of Tea consists of six of the brightest and most talented comedians to emerge from the training program at Los Angeles' famous IOWest.
When one hears the name Cup of Tea, comedy is not the first thing that comes to mind. The origins of the group's name are similarly non-sequitur.
"I thought that would be a name for one night only," says cast member Jason Frederick. Frederick came up with the name mere moments before the group's debut in the IOWest Student Cagematch. The group went on to win the Student Cagematch a record ten times, as well as the Mainstage Cagematch seventeen times, effectively cementing the troupe's unfortunate title. "So much regret inside now. . " Frederick laments.
With their Cagematch days behind them, Cup of Tea turned its collective energy toward writing and creating Applesauce Danger, an original sketch comedy show featuring the off-kilter humor of the group. Applesauce Danger debuted in March of 2005, drawing raves from dedicated audiences at IOWest.
In the spring of 2006, Cup of Tea presents its follow up to Applesauce Danger: The Business of Business. A skewed take on corporate culture, this all new show features the same brand of dangerous humor Cup of Tea fans have come to expect, as well as marking the debut of new cast member Opus Moreschi.
When not writing and performing sketch comedy, Cup of Tea can be seen performing its special brand of long form improvisation to devoted audiences in venues throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Check out the Calendar section to see when Cup of Tea is performing next.
